10/7/2011 VIA holds groundbreaking for new transit center and unveils Primo stations
VIA held a groundbreaking ceremony near the intersection of Babcock and Medical to kickoff construction of the new VIA South Texas Medical Center Transit Center. The center will serve as the Northern terminus for VIA’s first bus rapid transit line – VIA Primo. VIA also unveiled designs for the Primo stations that will serve riders along the route as well as the sleek colorful Primo vehicles on order. Primo is schedule to begin service before the end of 2012.

VIA is bringing Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) to the San Antonio area. Not since we first started service over 30 years ago has VIA introduced such a significant and distinctive transit option for our community.

BRT uses rubber-tire, high capacity vehicles; improved fare collection systems, and controlled traffic signals to move riders more efficiently. Boarding will take place at stations rather than bus stops. In the end, riders using this premier transit service will get to their destinations faster.

VIA's BRT line, called VIA Primo, will be along Fredericksburg Road traveling from the University of Texas at San Antonio 1604 campus to the South Texas Medical Center and on to downtown San Antonio. This line will change the face of the Fredericksburg Road corridor by offering opportunities for transit-oriented development.

Primo is a new concept for our city. We encourage everyone in the community to learn about the project and get involved.
